Two PhD studentships (one funded, one currently unfunded) are available in the Emmott lab for 2021 Start, these are:

  1. Mass-spectrometry-based proteomic analysis of protease activity during SARS-CoV-2 infection (unfunded)
  2. MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: Targeted assays for screening and treatment stratification of COVID-19 and other viral infections (funded)

Project one is led by Ed, with support from Dr Lance Turtle at Liverpool. This project will build upon the Emmott labs recent data in Meyer et al. 2020 which identified previously unknown proteolytic cleavage sites in important SARS-CoV-2 proteins, as well as cellular proteins which could be targeted with existing drugs to reduce SARS-CoV-2 replication.  It is unfunded and applicants with their own funding or who wish to apply for funding are advised to talk to Ed to discuss possibilities. More details on this project can be found here. Applications will be reviewed until a suitable candidate is identified.

Project 2 is led by Prof. Claire Eyers who shares lab space with Ed, with support from Ed and industry partners Thermo Scientific. This project builds on recent work the CPR has performed developing COVID-19 LC-MS/MS diagnostic assays as part of the COVID-19 Mass Spectrometry Consortium. Students are advised to get in touch with Claire before applying. More details on this project can be found here. The deadline for applying for this project is Jan 14th, 2021.
