Delighted the lab was able to contribute to a new preprint led by Harriet Mears from the Bauer lab on the emergence of novel subgenomic mRNAs in SARS-CoV-2. They found that mutations in a subset of SARS-CoV-2 variants result in the generation of a new TRS, and consequently produce a new subgenomic mRNA. The mRNA is coding, and produces an N-terminally truncated form of N (N.iORF3) which has the ability to inhibit interferon.
